Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma scuba community are joining forces to help the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup takes places at the Point Defiance Boathouse near Tacoma. The cleanup took out 810 pounds last year. This cleanup is an ongoing effort to protect marine life and preserve our environment. Scuba diving is an enjoyable hobby that can be promoted and shared with others.

Organisers plan to bring together kayakers and scuba divers to take out fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Divers will lift the net out of the water using a boat elevator once it is removed. Wounded Warriors will allow some participants to take large pieces of trash or other waste off the water. The cleanup is planned to preserve the water and provide an unforgettable experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Participating in a Tacoma SCUBA community-based rockfish survey can help to save endangered rockfish species. This dive is part in the Harbor WildWatch citizen-science collaboration with the NOAA. The survey is open for all divers. No experience or qualification required. The training takes place during the dive brief. Participation in night dives requires certification.

In 1998, WDFW initiated a multi-year mark capture study near Westport (Washington). The study includes a tag-recovery monitoring system for sport fishing that allows five annual releases of black rocksfish. These fish were released at pinnacles within the Westport charter fishing fleet. This survey involves placing two wire tags coded within the opercular muscle of these fish in order to identify individual captures.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

If you're looking for a place to go scuba diving in the greater Tacoma area, consider the waters near Commencement Bay. Earth Day saw 47 pounds of garbage collected by volunteer divers. Octopuses, fishing lines, and glass bottles were among the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), a part of Highline Community College organized the clean up. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation and treatment of wounded bull sea Lion

Tacoma dive group, Washington had the honor of seeing an amazing sight while they were scuba diving. A bull sea-lion had been shot with an arrow by scuba divers. The shark bite left a scar on the eye of the blind animal. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is now the name of the sea-lion after a character from the TV series "Vikings." This mighty creature, which now weighs almost 400 pounds, lives at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma scuba diving group was fortunate to witness this dramatic sight in October. It was the first sighting of a sea lion while diving. The group was so excited, they formed groups to watch the action. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. Sea lion pups tend to gather in groups of similar age, and will play with divers in the water. The pups enjoy playing with divers and jumping in the water to provide toys for them.
