How to Become a Dive Master

Dive masters are professionals who help others go underwater. They lead organized and recreational dives. Dive master certification is required in many countries for divers who have to be a supervisor or guide. A job as a divemaster isn't for everyone. If you have the right qualifications you can become a diving master. Below are some of the benefits you get from becoming a diver master.

What is the job description of a dive master? This job involves several duties. These include assessing and supervising dives for customers, giving briefings, and leading dive teams through the dive. The job description of a dive master is more varied. Diver masters may be responsible for many aspects of a dive shop including general operations and social media presence.

Instructors and supervisors of diving techniques teach and supervise in open water or swimming pools. They can also organize and supervise activities other than training such as navigation. Open water dive instructors are responsible for leading students on tour portions of the dives, which include the navigation exercise and surface swim portion. The job description of a dive instructor may also include directing certified divers through a scuba review course. Diver instructors have different legal responsibilities depending on where they live. The waiver signed by the dive instructor may exempt the diving instructor from legal responsibility in certain countries.

Certification requirements

A course is required to become a competent Divemaster. Divemaster classes cover topics such as managing divers, setting up dive sites, and finding the best flow. The minimum number of dives candidates need to have completed must be at least 60. Divemasters can assist novice divers with theory and skills, as well as assisting instructors during dive courses.


Dive masters have to take courses in addition. They also need to pass a two-part exam. The candidates must score at the least 75% on each portion of the exam in order to pass. Candidates will need to use the PADI Instructor manual and the electronic RDPML for the exam. Students are required to create an emergency response plan and practice five waterskills drills. The total scores must not exceed fifteen. After completion of the course, divers must obtain certification.

Internship required

You have many internship options for becoming a Divemaster. You have the option to help set up dive sites or assist with other PADI courses, depending on what you prefer. Your assistance may be needed for skill circuits. There will be a consistent pattern to your internship. A typical internship will last for eight weeks. In the same period, you may become an Advanced Open Water Diver. After that, you can become a Dive Guide or Divemaster after four to six weeks of training.

A Divemaster may offer a free internship in lieu of the paid ones. Even though free internships may not be ideal, they will allow you to get valuable advice and study from a Divemaster. In some cases, your internship might include manuals, certifications, or equipment. Be aware of all requirements before you sign up for any Divemaster course.
