Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma Scuba Community are joining forces to save the environment for Earth Day. The cleanup will take place at Point Defiance Boathouse, Tacoma. The cleanup removed 810 pounds worth of trash from the waters last year. This cleanup is an ongoing effort to protect marine life and preserve our environment. Participating in the cleanup is a great way for you to promote your business, and also allows you to meet people who love scuba diving.

Organizers are planning to have scuba divers and kayakers work together to remove discarded fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Once the net has been removed from the water, divers will lift it out of there using a boat elevator. Wounded Warriors will allow some participants to take large pieces of trash or other waste off the water. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can participate in a Tacoma SCUBA-based rockfish survey to help save endangered species. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. Divers of all levels are welcome to participate in the survey. There is no need for survey experience. The dive brief is the training. Night diving is permitted for those who are certified.

WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. The monitoring system of sport fishery tag-recovery monitoring involves five annual releases. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. Two wire tags with codes were placed in the opercular muscles of the fish for individual identification.

With just a few pounds of trash, you can easily get out.

Consider the waters near Commencement Beach if you're looking to go scuba dive in the greater Tacoma vicinity. Volunteer scuba divers brought up 47 pounds of garbage from the water this Earth Day. Octopuses, fishing lines, and glass bottles were among the garbage. Marine Science and Technology Center MaST, part Highline Community College, organized this clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

Tacoma, Washington dive group had the opportunity to witness an amazing sight while scuba diving. The sight of a bull sealion injured by an arrow stunned divers. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn, who was blind from the shark bite, was taken to Los Angeles' Marine Mammal Care Center where rescuers assisted him in gaining weight. Bjorn is now the name of the sea-lion after a character from the TV series "Vikings." This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

The dramatic sight was witnessed by a Tacoma scuba diving team in October. It was their first encounter with a sealion during a dive. They were so excited to be able to share the experience with other scuba divers. The lions' playful nature is also apparent during the observation. Sea lion pups are more likely to play in the water with divers of similar age and group together. The pups enjoy playing with divers and jumping in the water to provide toys for them.
