Mechanisms and Symptoms of Nitrogen Narcosis

scuba diving equipment octopus

Nitrogen narcosis is a condition in which the body experiences a lack of oxygen and becomes deaf. The condition affects most divers at 60-70 meters. However, some suffer from severe hearing loss as they are breathing in air at 30-40 meters. While the symptoms do not worsen with time and at a constant depth of 60 to 70 meters, they will increase with greater pressures. Ascent is the best way to reverse symptoms. We'll be looking at the causes and mechanisms of nitrogen addiction, as well its predisposing elements, in this article.

The symptoms

Nitrogen narcosis is a psychophysical condition caused by high levels of nitrogen in the blood. It is most common at dives below 30 m. However, it can also occur at lower depths. Divers need to be able to recognize symptoms and seek medical attention immediately. You should immediately seek medical attention if any of the symptoms are present. If the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis are severe, you should contact a medical professional immediately.

Mechanisms

The mechanism of nitrogen narcosis is not fully understood, but the effects of this state are similar to those of altitude sickness. While good cardiovascular health is not enough to protect against the effects, it does help with the severity. Heavy physical labor, stress, fatigue and carbon dioxide retention all increase the risk of developing nitrogen narcosis. Use of marijuana or alcohol may also increase the severity.

Predisposing factors

Nitrogen narcosis is an extremely dangerous condition. There are many factors that can increase your risk. Divers must be aware what to look out and avoid while diving. These include excessive carbon dioxide levels and fatigue, as well as the use of narcotics. However, these factors should not prevent you from participating in deep diving.

The effects of judgment

Nitrogen narcosis is a condition in which the brain functions are altered and the patient becomes confused. This condition can often be accompanied by changes to the sense of time or handwriting. Exaggerated gait patterns can lead to poor execution of fine movements. Slow movements can reduce this impairment. Further, numbness in the legs, arms, and lips can cause a deadpan look.

Comorbidities

Narcotics may slow down brain functions and lead to mental confusion. It is believed that their effects are additive and synergistic. It is unknown what the effect of nitrogen on carbon dioxide will be. It is important for you to know that both carbon dioxide as well as nitrogen can be found in your blood. However, there are some other possible comorbidities of nitrogen narcosis. Learn more about these and other symptoms.

Treatment

While the symptoms of nitrogen addiction are very similar to altitude sick, there are some exceptions. Your cardiovascular health is not enough to protect you against nitrogen narcosis. The risk of this condition is increased by thermal cold, fatigue, and excessive work. Retention of carbon dioxide makes nitrogen narcosis much more dangerous. The most vulnerable are those who consume alcohol, marijuana or any other drug.
